Job Title: Senior Manager - Climate

Function: Investment Research

Location: Mumbai (Powai)

Job Purpose

The role sits within the climate team. M&G Investments’ climate team supports the integration of climate change within investment activities of the firm. This involves development of climate metrics and frameworks, undertaking company research and implementing our exclusion policies at fund and firm level. This role is focused on enhancing M&G Investments’ approach to climate risk with specific responsibilities related to the implementation of the M&G Thermal Coal Investment Policy. Secondary responsibilities will include supporting the operationalisation of Sustainability strategies, alongside with being the first escalation point of call for the Sustainability Analyst. 

Accountabilities / Responsibilities:

Key activities include: 

  • Exclusion policy implementation – Delivery of the day-to-day implementation of the Thermal Coal Investment Policy. Monitoring the compliance of all holdings with the policy, undertaking company research to identify if specific issuers are compliant with the policy’s requirements, coordinating an annual review of the policy and maintaining records and operational documentation. As required engagement with internal stakeholders regarding the implementation of the policy (e.g. colleagues across the investment division).

  • Company analysis and engagement – Undertake company level analysis of transition plans to support the identification of issuers that are well positioned for the energy transition. Support engagement activities by identifying priority topics for discussions with company management. 

  • Climate risk process enhancement – Support the development of M&G Investments’ process for managing its exposure to climate risk across climate sensitive sectors like coal and oil & gas.

  • Climate metric development – Support the development and implementation of companywide and fund level climate metrics including but not limited to carbon emissions, climate solutions and transition finance metrics. Support the development and implementation of metrics, tools and research frameworks for assessing climate risk, opportunity across different asset classes and sectors. 

  • Reporting – As required, support the development of group level climate reporting and other client focused reporting on M&G Investments’ climate strategy and activities. 

  • Strategic Sustainability Initiatives Implementation – Support implementation of various sustainability initiative to enhance and simplify controls for M&G Sustainability

  • This involves development of climate metrics and frameworks, undertaking company research and implementing our exclusion policies at fund and firm level.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Educational Qualification

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Proven track record managing complex projects, working with multiple stakeholders with different need and concerns

  • Strong numerical skills with fluency in the use of excel. Ability to use python and other tools to analyse large data sets, desirable. Experience working with large data sets.

  • Strong understanding of carbon accounting frameworks and methodologies (e.g. Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials and the GHG Protocol).

  • Strong understanding of company transition planning frameworks and climate metrics like science based target setting methodologies. Detailed understanding of the energy transition pathways of companies in different sectors (particularly heavy industries and power sector companies).

  • Strong understanding and experience to support governance forums and committees, ensuring effective decision-making, regulatory compliance, and strategic alignment. Skilled in preparing agendas, managing voting processes, and overseeing documentation to maintain transparency and accountability.

  • Comprehensive understanding of climate science, climate policy and energy transition scenarios.

  • Experienced working on big climate projects / GHG data set projects / climate target setting projects / delivering a coal or ESG exclusions policy / doing climate scenario analysis

  • Demonstrate ability to use AI to accelerate the research process

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to prioritise and deliver work in a flexible manner

  • Very strong planning and organisational skills

  • Experience in people management preferred

Experience:

  • 6-8 years of experience in sustainability

Educational Qualification:

  • Post-graduate from a reputed institute

  • CFA ESG Investing or Climate certificate desirable

  • Qualifications in project management desirable
