The role sits within the Bankwest Technology division. Bankwest is a subsidiary of The Commonwealth Bank, and the Bankwest Technology division (BWT) is accountable for maintaining system resilience and supporting the delivery of our bold technology strategy at pace and scale.
Bankwest Technology consists of Platforms and Chapters underpinned by areas of expertise that manage Bankwest technology, applications and systems to support the Bankwest business. Bankwest Technology is located primarily in Bankwest Place in Perth, WA and has a total approx. 650 employees.

Role Overview:
We are seeking a Product Owner to lead initiatives that improve the home loan journey by enabling more seamless, automated, and straight-through lending outcomes.
The role will focus on the Home loans Pre offer space, helping transform manual validation activities into digitised, rules-driven, and intelligence-led capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Translate home lending validation, risk, operational, and customer experience needs into product features, epics, user stories, and backlog items.
- Own and prioritise the squad backlog for initiatives across the Validators space, ensuring alignment to crew objectives and measurable business outcomes.
- Lead initiatives that improve and automate income verification, reducing manual validator effort while maintaining strong lending quality and risk controls.
- Support the expansion of our fraud detection capabilities beyond payslips to additional document types used in the home loan application journey.
- Partner with validators, lending operations, risk, compliance, and technology stakeholders to identify pain points and deliver practical, scalable solutions.
- Define clear acceptance criteria and ensure delivered solutions meet business, risk, compliance, and operational requirements.
- Monitor and use key performance indicators such as straight-through processing rates, validation turnaround time, manual touchpoints, exception volumes, rework rates, fraud detection outcomes, and validator productivity.
- Support change management, adoption, and communications for new validation capabilities, ensuring users understand new processes and system behaviours.
- Continuously identify opportunities to simplify the home loan journey, reduce operational friction, and improve customer, banker, broker, and validator experience.
- Promote quality delivery through automation, data-driven decision-making, and close collaboration with engineers, analysts, testers, designers, and business SMEs.
Skills & Experience:
- 8–12 years of experience in product ownership, business analysis, lending technology, financial services, operations transformation, or digital delivery.
- Strong understanding of home lending processes, including application assessment, document collection, income verification, validation, credit risk controls, and operational workflows.
- Experience working with lending operations, validators, bankers, brokers, risk, compliance, and technology teams.
- Experience delivering automation, workflow digitisation, rules-based decisioning, straight-through processing, or operational efficiency initiatives.
- Good understanding of fraud detection, document verification, income verification, and risk-based controls within a lending environment.
- Experience with Agile delivery, including backlog management, story writing, prioritisation, sprint planning, stakeholder engagement, and delivery governance.
- Ability to convert complex business problems into clear product outcomes, requirements, and delivery plans.
- Strong analytical mindset, with the ability to use data and operational metrics to identify opportunities and measure success.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and influencing skills.
- Ability to balance customer experience, operational efficiency, risk management, compliance, and technology delivery constraints.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering in Computer Science/Information Technology
