What you'll do:

• Build maintainable backend services using modern Java, Spring Boot, and appropriate Spring modules, following the platform’s defined architecture and standards.
• Take ownership of the most complex features and toughest implementation problems, from implementation and automated testing through deployment and production support.
• Read and understand existing code across services, including .NET and other languages, to understand features, data flows, and integration points and build on them effectively. Learn new languages as needed.
• Develop reactive, non-blocking services with Spring WebFlux and Project Reactor, using practical judgment to decide when reactive programming is the right choice.
• Implement well-designed REST APIs and, where appropriate, gRPC services, with clear contracts, validation, versioning, error handling, and backward compatibility.
• Build event-driven integrations using Kafka and/or RabbitMQ, applying sound practices for message delivery, idempotency, retries, ordering, and dead-letter handling.
• Model and access data in relational databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and NoSQL databases, apply caching effectively with Redis, and use Elasticsearch/OpenSearch for indexing and search workloads.
• Own the process of packaging and deploying services to Kubernetes: write Helm charts, manage Kubernetes configuration (ConfigMaps, Secrets (HashiCorp Vault), health probes, resource requests/limits, HPA), and carry out safe rolling deployments.
• Set high standards for code quality: write thorough automated tests, lead by example in design and code reviews, and mentor engineers in implementation, testing, and debugging.
• Troubleshoot production issues and continually improve service reliability and performance.
• Work with product, architecture, security, DevOps/SRE, and other engineering teams throughout the software delivery lifecycle.

Skills and Experience

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with expert hands-on coding skills.
• Strong Java development skills: object-oriented design, collections, concurrency, asynchronous processing, and JVM fundamentals.
• Production experience with Spring Boot and practical knowledge of Spring WebFlux/Project Reactor and reactive programming principles.
• Proven ability to get up to speed quickly on unfamiliar codebases: trace code paths, understand existing features and conventions, and make changes that fit the established design.
• Ability to read and understand project code in .NET and other languages, with a willingness to learn and code in any language as needed.
• Strong API engineering skills: REST/HTTP semantics, API contracts, validation, error handling, pagination, versioning, and OpenAPI documentation.
• Distributed-systems fundamentals: timeouts, retries, circuit breakers, rate limiting, idempotency, caching, and graceful degradation.
• Experience with Kafka or RabbitMQ and event-driven/asynchronous communication patterns.
• Solid relational database skills with PostgreSQL or MySQL: schema design, SQL, transactions and isolation, indexing, query optimization, and schema migrations (e.g., Flyway/Liquibase).
• Working knowledge of NoSQL data modeling, querying, indexing, consistency, and performance. Experience with Elasticsearch/OpenSearch is a plus.
• Experience using Redis (or a comparable distributed cache) for caching, session state, or rate limiting, including cache invalidation and TTL strategies.
• Strong automated-testing practices with JUnit 5, Mockito, AssertJ, Spring Boot Test, and Testcontainers. Integration and contract testing are expected.
• Application security fundamentals with Spring Security: TLS, JWT, OAuth 2.0/OpenID Connect, authentication vs. authorization, secrets management, and secure API development.
• Hands-on Kubernetes deployment experience, including Helm: writing and maintaining charts, values management across environments, Kubernetes configuration (ConfigMaps, Secrets, readiness/liveness/startup probes, resource requests and limits), horizontal scaling, and rollout/rollback strategies.
• Practical scripting skills in shell and/or Python for automation, diagnostics, build/deployment tasks, and developer tooling.
• Experience with Git, Maven or Gradle, CI/CD pipelines, and production observability through structured logs, metrics, and traces (OpenTelemetry).
• Hands-on experience with production observability tools for monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting live services. This must include at least one tool in each category: metrics/dashboards (Prometheus, Grafana), log aggregation (Splunk, ELK/OpenSearch Dashboards, Loki), and APM (New Relic, Datadog, Dynatrace, or Azure Application Insights).
• Ability to communicate trade-offs clearly, review code constructively, and take ownership of services in production.

• Microsoft Azure: AKS, Azure Service Bus / Event Hubs, Blob Storage, Key Vault, Entra ID, Azure Monitor / Application Insights
• OLAP / analytics stores: BigQuery, Snowflake, ClickHouse, or Azure Synapse (analytical query patterns, partitioning/clustering, batch vs. streaming warehouse ingestion)
• API gateways: Envoy, Kong, Spring Cloud Gateway, or cloud-managed gateways
• Resilience libraries such as Resilience4j or comparable tools (circuit breakers, retries, bulkheads, time limiters)
• Performance testing with Gatling or a comparable load/performance testing tool
• Go (strong bonus, not required)
• Service meshes, GitOps (Argo CD/Flux), infrastructure as code
• Domain-driven design, microservice patterns, schema evolution, consumer-driven contract testing, software supply-chain security
