About the Role
We’re looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our LC Phone Team, which powers the core communication platform handling SMS, MMS, Voice Calls, Whatsapp and RCS messaging across our product ecosystem. This team is responsible for delivering a reliable, secure, and performant infrastructure that handles millions of time-critical operations — from Purchasing Phone numbers, Delivering SMS, Connecting Voice calls, Conferences, Automated Billing systems through multiple service providers.
Millions of SMBs on our platform utilise these services to communicate with their customers, provide services and updates. Currently the system handles 100M+ events on a daily basis spanning across 15+ different services. LC Phone is a major contributor to Highlevel’s revenue where services uptime, reliability are paramount, making sure customers are having the best experience possible on the platform.
As a Staff Engineer, you’ll lead the technical direction of the platform, solve complex distributed system problems, and mentor 10+ engineers across squads of 5 different products. You’ll partner closely with PMs, designers, infra, and security teams to drive long-term architecture, elevate engineering standards, and ensure seamless user experiences at scale.
Responsibilities
- Platform Architecture & System DesignOwn architecture and scaling strategy for key Funnel/Website Builder systems (real-time collaborative editor, rendering engine, theme system, publishing pipeline)Lead major cross-cutting initiatives focused on reliability, rendering performance, delivery latency, and workflow consistency across builder surfacesDrive long-term technical direction for the Builder’s component framework, visual layout engine, template system, and underlying microservicesArchitect low-latency, high-availability systems that serve traffic across global regions for millions of page loads per second
- Performance, Observability & ReliabilityImprove platform-wide observability using Prometheus/Grafana, OpenTelemetry, and structured logsCreate and enforce SLOs around page rendering time, editor responsiveness, AI generation latency, and publishing reliabilityElevate resiliency across builder services through improved caching, CDN strategies, edge rendering, pre-rendering, and failover patternsDeveloper Experience & QualityDrive improvements to internal tools, build pipelines, shared component libraries, and design systems powering the Builder ecosystemEstablish coding standards, testing frameworks, and architectural patterns that scale across dozens of engineers and multiple productsLeverage LLM-assisted development workflows to accelerate code quality, refactoring, and debugging while enforcing guardrails for reliability
- Leadership & CollaborationMentor and guide engineers across squads, encouraging technical excellence, growth, and strong engineering fundamentalsPartner with PMs, designers, infra, and security to define technical roadmap and deliver impactful, high-quality experiencesLead design reviews, architecture deep-dives, and on-call rotations that reinforce a high-bar culture of ownership and operational excellence
Requirements
- 8+ years of full stack engineering experience with deep knowledge across frontend, backend, and cloudExpert-level knowledge of Vue, modern JavaScript/TypeScript, and component-driven architectures
- Advanced experience with NestJS, Express, and building scalable backend servicesStrong understanding of SQL databases and NoSQL systems (MongoDB, Firestore)
- Hands-on experience with ElasticSearch for indexing, search, and analyticsDeep familiarity with Nginx, proxies, load balancers, caching headers, and HTTP performance tuningStrong experience with GCP (Cloud Run, GKE, Pub/Sub, Firestore, CloudSQL, etc.)
- Knowledge of CDN strategies across Cloudflare & GCP (caching, edge rules, performance optimization)
- Operational & Architectural ExcellenceStrong grasp of distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and microservices design
- Experience with observability tools, dashboards, logs, and SLOsAbility to lead large-scale refactoring, platform migrations, or architectural rewrites
