Job Summary

We’re looking for an Integration Engineer to design, configure, and operate the integration layer that powers People Products at scale. This role is responsible for how data, events, and cases flow across our People & Places technology ecosystem, ensuring reliability, security, and operational efficiency across high-volume, business-critical workflows.

You will lead complex, cross-platform integration initiatives across Unily, Universal Bot (IBM Watson), ServiceNow (ITSM), Syndio, Better Up, HR Acuity, Unum, Fidelity, and Workday. This role will report into People Products leadership and partner closely with Enterprise Architecture and Platform Engineering teams (BTT).

You’ll be part of our People & Places organization, whose ambition is to make People Experience a core differentiator, on par with our customer-facing products. The People Products team builds cloud-based, scalable, compliant, and deeply integrated solutions that reduce operational friction, improve employee trust, and enable People teams to scale without linear headcount growth.

This role is foundational: success is measured in fewer manual handoffs, lower failure rates, and trusted system-to-system orchestration.

In This Role, You Will:Key ResponsibilitiesIntegration Engineering & Architecture
  • Design and own the end-to-end integration architecture across People Products platforms, supporting 10K+ employees and high-volume transactional workloads.
  • Build API-driven and event-driven integrations that move employee, case, and workflow data across systems with minimal coupling.
  • Define and enforce standards for:
    • Canonical data models and schema evolution
    • API contracts, versioning, and backward compatibility
    • Idempotency, retries, replay, and dead-letter handling
  • Select integration patterns (synchronous vs asynchronous, orchestration vs pub/sub) based on latency targets, volume thresholds, and failure tolerance.
  • Own architecture decisions from design to implementation to production operations.
Platform Integration Delivery
  • Build and operate bi-directional integrations across:
    • Unily - Employee entry point for guided journeys, request initiation, and unified status visibility.
    • IBM - AI and analytics integrations supporting employee assistance and operational insights.
    • Okta - Identity lifecycle synchronization for access provisioning and deprovisioning.
    • Syndio - Secure exchange of compensation and pay equity data for compliant execution.
    • BetterUp - Coaching eligibility, enrollment, and participation tied to employee lifecycle events.
    • IAM / SailPoint - Identity governance and access changes driven by hire, job change, and termination events.
    • HR Acuity - Secure ER case signals, escalation indicators, and lifecycle status.
    • ServiceNow ITSM - Case intake, routing, SLAs, ownership, and parent-child structures.
    • Workday - System of record for worker, job, position, and effective-dated events.
    • Unum - Leave initiation, eligibility, and status synchronization.
    • Fidelity - Retirement and financial benefits eligibility and status updates.
  • Implement integrations using:
    • Workday Studio for complex orchestration and transformations
    • Workday Integration Cloud (IC) and delivered APIs where appropriate
    • REST APIs and webhooks for non-Workday platforms
  • Handle effective dating, retroactivity, partial updates, and reconciliation explicitly and safely.
Workflow Orchestration & Messaging
  • Implement asynchronous workflow orchestration using queues and events rather than synchronous chaining.
  • Use messaging platforms (AWS, Kafka, or equivalent) to:
    • Decouple systems
    • Enable retries and replay
    • Absorb downstream outages without cascading failures
  • Support People workflows including:
    • Tier 0-4 case routing models
    • Cross-COE handoffs
    • Deterministic case progression across systems
Reliability, Observability & Operations
  • Build integrations to production reliability standards, including:
    • Structured logging with correlation IDs
    • Metrics for throughput, latency, backlog depth, and error rates
    • Alerting tied to SLAs and operational thresholds
  • Define and track integration SLAs, failure rates and recovery times and data consistency indicators.
  • Produce operational runbooks covering incident response, replay and recovery as well as root-cause analysis
  • Partner with Platform/BTT teams to ensure integrations remain stable, observable, and operable.
Security, Privacy & Compliance
  • Implement secure integration patterns using:
    • OAuth 2.0 and token-based authentication
    • Secret management and rotation
    • TLS encryption in transit
  • Enforce role- and field-level access controls for PII and sensitive HR/ER data.
  • Ensure end-to-end auditability, traceable data lineage and compliance with HR, ER, and regulatory data handling requirements
  • Design integrations that are analytics- and AI-ready without over-exposing sensitive data.
Technical Leadership & Stakeholder Partnership
  • Act as the technical owner for People platform integrations.
  • Partner with:
    • People Product Managers
    • People Ops & COEs
    • Enterprise Architecture & Integration teams
    • External vendors and implementation partners
  • Review vendor designs and challenge assumptions with data and architecture principles.
  • Communicate complex technical tradeoffs clearly to technical and executive audiences.
  • Maintain technical documentation, diagrams, and long-term integration roadmaps.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience accepted.
  • 10+ years of experience in integration engineering, platform engineering, or distributed systems.
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • REST APIs, webhooks, and event-driven architectures
    • Workday Studio and/or Workday Integration Cloud
    • Message queues or streaming platforms (Kafka, AWS SQS/SNS, or equivalent)
  • Proven experience operating production integrations at scale (10K+ users).
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Effective-dated data models
    • Partial failures and retries
    • Schema evolution and backward compatibility
  • Experience integrating HR, case management, or enterprise SaaS platforms.
Core Competencies
  • Structured Systems Thinking: Ability to design resilient architectures in complex, multi-system environments.
  • Operational Excellence: Relentless focus on reliability, observability, and failure reduction.
  • Results Orientation: Ability to tie technical decisions to measurable business outcomes.
  • Clear Technical Communication: Can explain complex architectures without hand-waving or jargon.
  • Ownership Mindset: Treats integrations as long-lived products, not one-time builds.
Desired Skills
  • Experience with ServiceNow integrations.
  • Familiarity with HR domains such as employee lifecycle, benefits, leave, or employee relations.
  • Experience supporting global, multi-region systems.
  • Ability to quantify technical impact (cycle time reduction, error reduction, operational savings).
Tools
  • REST APIs, webhooks, Workday Studio, Workday Integration Cloud
  • Middleware & Eventing: MuleSoft, Boomi, Workato, Datadog; Kafka, AWS SQS/SNS, or equivalent
  • Logging, metrics, and alerting platforms [Datadog, SEIM]
  • Jira, Asana, Confluence, ServiceNow
