Role Overview

We are seeking an Indirect Tax Research Analyst to join our team. This is a mid-level position that offers the autonomy to take ownership of key tax research functions while being mentored by the Head of Indirect Tax Content. You will analyze, document, and map complex U.S. sales and use tax laws, ensuring they are accurately represented in our platform. In this role, you will drive research initiatives independently and collaborate cross-functionally with product, compliance, and engineering teams to keep our tax content accurate and our tax engine compliant.

As an expert in indirect tax research, you will play a crucial role in sourcing, investigating, and integrating state and local tax rules into our platform. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth research on U.S. Sales and Use Tax regulations, staying current with state and local tax law changes to ensure compliance and product accuracy.
  • Own the sourcing, investigation, and integration of tax rates, rules, forms, and metadata into Commenda’s tax engine.
  • Collaborate closely with the tax content, compliance, product, and engineering teams to implement tax rule updates, solve taxability issues, and support product enhancements.
  • Document research findings in clear, concise reports, and maintain a knowledge repository for internal reference and training.
  • Navigate tax authority portals and maintain relationships with state and local regulators to resolve issues and obtain up-to-date information.
  • Stay ahead of trends and regulatory changes that could impact tax compliance, and propose updates or improvements as needed.
  • Over time, help mentor junior researchers and contribute to the growth of the tax research function within Commenda.
  • Flexibility to occasionally overlap working hours with U.S. time zones for team collaboration and training.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in U.S. indirect tax, including extensive knowledge of tax rates, rules, and returns.
  • Demonstrated experience in indirect tax research, with the ability to distill key data for accurate publication.
  • Legal research experience interpreting complex tax regulations and developing solutions in tax technology.
  • Experience working with tax technology solutions, including software implementation or tax process improvement initiatives.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team.
  • While a college degree is not required, candidates with relevant qualifications or equivalent experience are welcome.
